Gymnastics activities are a core element of the physical education national curriculum and gymnastics continues to be the predominant sport taught in schools through which the statutory requirements of this activity are delivered. In addition, many schools have gymnastics extra curricular programmes and/or links with gymnastics clubs.

 

Complete Recreational Gymnastics is presented in a DVD format, which allows for easy navigation through four of the key areas of artistic gymnastics - floor, beam, vault and bars. Complimentary ideas are provided in the form of warm up games and circuits. In total there are more than 550 drills that help the user to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in gymnastics. The video footage is clear, brief and well presented - helpful and innovative coaching tips and progressions are demonstrated, many of which could be applied to a class situation (although this aspect isn’t necessarily shown).

 

This resource is particularly helpful for providing additional ideas for the club coach or qualified gymnastics teacher. Individual coaching points are amplified and progressions towards high quality performance are shown. A natural development of this DVD would be a resource that shows how pupils might apply the ideas (shown in Complete Recreational Gymnastics) within a compositional gymnastics class setting to meet the physical education national curriculum programme of study during school curriculum time. It would be helpful too, if such a resource showed boys and girls representing a full range of age and ability.
